Smile Train, RBSK sign MoU to help children with cleft lips,palates


MANGALURU: Smile Train India, children's NGO and Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) under department of health, have signed MoU to partner for second year in a row. Under this, RBSK officials from 24 districts including DK will direct children born with cleft lips and palates to nine Smile Train partner hospitals in Karnataka for free cleft lip and palate surgery. Smile Train will provide free cleft lip and palate surgeries, and post-operative care.
The partnership now in its second year looks at intensifying its outreach so that more children can benefit from free surgeries and get a chance to lead a normal life. Last year, the partnership helped heal clefts of over 2000 children in Karnataka and in last 15 years, has provided more than 32,000 free cleft lip and palate surgeries in the state. The surgeries will be provided at Smile Train centers including A J Hospital and Research Centre and K S Hegde Charitable Hospital.
Dr P Saroja, project director (reproductive and child health programme), National Health Mission and Leela Imam, director Programs, Smile Train India signed the MoU in the presence of Dr Arif Baig, RBSK consultant and Dr Prabhudeba Gowda , deputy director, RBSK. Leela Imam said more than 10 lakh untreated cases of cleft exist in the country, due to monetary constraints or lack of awareness. "Together, we can bridge the gap and heal the cleft," she said.
